It's a home server where I run my own services instead of using the cloud. In my case it's a small computer with Ubuntu and Docker running dozens of apps — from media to smart home.
Yes — data is backed up (including off-site), and network traffic is monitored and filtered. I watch the server's health live with Prometheus, Grafana and Loki, so I know about a problem before anything breaks.
The cloud is convenient, but you pay a subscription and hand your data to companies. A homelab is a one-off hardware cost and full control — a deliberate choice, not penny-pinching.
Not to start — many services launch with a few clicks thanks to Docker. Over time it helps to learn the basics, but you can grow slowly, one thing at a time.
